Additional information
Aeronautical engineering
Graduates of aeronautical engineering work in all areas of the aircraft and airline industries. They also work in other exciting areas such as motor vehicle production and in the energy industry. In Europe, large transport and aviation companies employ aeronautical engineers, as do the smaller companies who produce components and services. Air forces across the globe also employ aeronautical engineers.
Air transport engineering
The focus of air transport engineering is on the safety and effective operation of aircraft. Air transport engineers are effective communicators who take on board the rapid changes necessary to coordinate activity between maintenance organisations and engineers of other disciplines. They also use managerial and technical skills to find the best solution to problems based around time, cost and technical constraints. The role is a dynamic one which requires knowledge of the latest air transport technologies.
Air transport operations
Air transport operations offers the chance to become a pilot with the operational, organisational and business skills to achieve a fast-track career progression to a senior position in the airline industry. The programme is a joint venture between City University and a number of Civil Aviation Authority-accredited flying schools.
Air transport studies
Graduates of air transport studies work in the airline industry, not as pilots or engineers, but in the vital roles of managers, coordinators and operational staff. Employees in these areas need to have a practical understanding of airport design, operation and legislation, as well as a good general knowledge of the aircraft industry as a business in a national and international economy. They also need key management skills such as the ability to lead teams and deploy staff and resources. |
